I just purchased this ZyXEL P-330W Router from CompUSA for $9.99 after two mail in rebates.
I bought it because my netgear WGR614 v5 lockes up (doesn't even respond to ping on the LAN side) every 4 hrs or so.
It's amazing to me that you can't find out the features of these routers by looking at the box. Here is what I ended up not liking about this unit:
- Can't assign a static IP to a given MAC address. In my netgear, I could enter the MAC addresses of all my PC's so that they would always DHCP the same address.
- Upgrading firmware requires backup/restore of configuration options. It didn't save the options automatically. The latest firmware, however, does say that with all future upgrades this will no longer be an issue.
- Changing a setting causes a complete restart of the device includeing disconnect/reconnect of all client machines. I don't know what sw engineer decided that was the best approach, but it is pretty bad.
Stuff I liked:
It has an option to use the wireless side as a client to essentially bridge a wired lan conencted to the 4 port built in switch to some other wireless network. Linksys only allows you to do this if the wireless lan you are connecting to is an identical Linksys device. I don't think netgear allows this at all, but I don't really remember for sure. I do know both Linksys and netgear sell more expensive wireless bridge devices which I'm sure are just routers with a new front faceplate sticker and minor sw tweaks.
